It always shocks me to find a badge-chaser on Oppo.

Badge-chaser...I'm confused. I mean I think I know what you are talking about but not really sure.

why? if someone has a particular interest in a certain brand then they should chase it. that doesn't have any particularly non-oppo traits to it. unless they are chasing things like bmw 328/528s just for the status, that is.

I'm totally confused. Because badge chaser, at least in my mind only has one meaning. And... this seems like a strange place for it.

There are chicks trying to hook up with cops on oppo?

Just because people are on Oppo doesn't mean they are all the same type/level of car enthusiast. Some are only enthusiastic as far as what's "popular" or "trendy", some are die hard brand loyalists because that's their personality type or they simply dislike variation, and some are true gear heads who are all about the mechanics.

Just because we are all on Oppo doesn't mean we really have anything in common other than a potential slight overlap of liking some form of motorized vehicle that likely has 4 wheels and some that have more or less.

I'm glad there are brand loyalists of all kinds on Oppo/Jalop, because the volume of knowledge they have about a particular make or model is typically useful, interesting, and impressive.

People that are only concerned with driving a top-tier brand, even if it's the base model, just to have a premium brand.

No, I can't imagine it will.

I'm still waiting to see what his trump card is. He referenced an alfa, but wouldn't give up the goods as to *his* ride. Very FP of him, I thought.

People who bash manufacturers other than the ones they like annoy me to no end. I may be loyal to Subaru but that doesn't stop me from appreciating what other companies are doing and wanting some of the cars they make.

But makes more sense with the context, other than the phrase has been in use for decades to mean something else.

Sounds like a friend of mine. After another friend of ours got a BMW, he went full retard BMW lover. 3 weeks ago he finally bought a 3 series 2007 with twin turbos and yadayadayada. I posted a Miata that I wanted that was FS on my FB wall. Came and said, "dafuq...""get a serious car" implying that I need a BMW no matter which model. To which I reply "get lost". He then said "You dont see it now but it's gonna be like your phone when you switched from Windows Phone to Android...you aren't waken up yet". I'm like "I don't need a fuckin' BMW nor cars with gazillions HP especially where we live. I love driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow and the Miata fits MY bill. Besides, I'm happy to be saving up a shitload of money for other projects." That shut him up. Seriously...some people need a good slap on their faces.

Ahh, interesting. I'd be hard-pressed to make the claim that the Panther was the epitome of wisdom, grace and mature elegance. That said, both are relatively simple platforms, upon which many mods can be made. As such, I'd like to think he'd have more, rather than less, in common with the OP.

My confusion continues unabated ...

It won't be an Alfa. If it was, he would have whipped that our already. It's something not worth mentioning, and he knows it, but feels vindicated because it's from a "respected" brand. My money is on an old 318/323, broke down E-Class, or a Passat that he can't keep on the road.

See Flint's response to me - might be a Panther, to which I'm confused as to why he doesn't see certain similarities (simplicity, easy to mod), as opposed to highlighting any perceived differences.

Disclaimer: I poke fun of Honda owners. A lot.

I read that exchange and I'm glad that's the exception and not the rule on Oppo. We're a good bunch of people, and it sucks when someone has to act out like that. Especially when it's not about the badge, or even what /you/ think about the car, but rather what the owner thinks and loves.

For example, I really don't like my mother's 2014 Fiesta sedan. It's automatic, slow, the seats suck for long trips and it doesn't get any better mileage than my 2013 Mazda3. However, she loves the car, so who am I to judge? On the other hand, she hated my Volvo 740 wagon, because it was big, noisy, not particularly pretty and tended to be terrifying at anything past 1/4 throttle. Different cars for different folks.

I'm constantly amazed at how broad the spectrum of "car enthusiast" is. Everything from hyper-brand-conscious people to those who remove all trace of branding from their cars. People who are only into gazillion-dollar supercars and guys who are into fixing up beaters. It's pretty cool.
